First of all, lets talk down'n dirty about sticking with an—often—extensive nutritional protocol(s) for years on end (as in "chronically"). The most important thing you can do is make this as hassle-free a process as possible, a daunting task when a protocol can approach 30-50+ pills per day. So here are a few of Freds' "rules" for stickin-with-it:

1) USE THE 3"x 3" ZIPLOC BAGS (see order sheet under, 'bags'). Instead of opening the bottles every day and driving yourself crazy, make your packets up once a month. If your protocol includes acidophilus in pill form, put those in one week at a time (they'll be fine for a week). The other supplements we say to refrigerate are only for long-term storage, you can still put these into the bags a month at a time.

2) USE THE FLORESCENT THREE-COLORED STICKERS for each meal (see order sheet under 'stickers'). Just put a different colored circular sticker on the packs for breakfast, lunch, dinner.

3) TAKE YOU PROTOCOL AFTER EATING. Yeah, I know certain pills should be taken before or after a meal, but if this proves too much for you then take'em with food. The important thing is that you take them instead of dropping the entire protocol, or single supplement, because it was too hard to take. The only exception to this rule is the Tai He Bitter melon which needs to be absolutely taken without food.

4) GIVE YOURSELF A DOSE -OR DAY- OFF ONCE PER WEEK. Go "on strike" one or two doses a week, or take an entire day off if necessary. NOTE: You should never do this with any of your pharmaceutical drugs! It's important to give yourself some breathing room and flexibility so that you don't become overwhelmed and stop entirely. This may sound radical to you, but for me, after nine years on 50+ pills per day the above suggestion makes a lot of sense. I've been practicing this for years now and have not noticed any detrimental effects from a slightly irregular pill-taking pattern.

One should always begin—or stop completely—a protocol gradually. Start with one quarter the intended dose and every three to five days increase the amount one quarter until you have reached the desired level. This is equally as true if you are planning to stop any part of your protocol. If you have a history of drug allergies or are highly sensitive to various allergens it might be a good idea to begin your protocol with only one substance at the recommended dose, while slowly adding additional products one at a time, every five days, until reaching the full dosages.

ES=Take on empty stomach 20 minutes before or 90 minutes after eating

(A kitchen tablespoon or teaspoon is the one you find in your silverware drawer. A measuring tablespoon or teaspoon is the one you use for exact measurements—as in the 4-5 little spoons that come connected together with a quarter teaspoon, etc.)Please remember that DAAIR continues to test many of its products at independent laboratories to assure you consistent and ongoing quality, purity and potency.

Note: These protocols are dated. We hope to have updates for many of these available in the near future. Still, a lot of the basics remain the same. A good multivitamin, B complex, NAC, alpha lipoic acid, protein supplements like whey, carnitine and coenzyme Q10 remain cornerstones a more complete approach to managing both HIV disease and the side effects of antiretroviral therapy.
